UK Foreign Secretary Begins Visit to China
Cooper’s visit, which runs until June 3, comes at the invitation of her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. This diplomatic engagement follows UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s landmark journey to China earlier this year — the first such visit since 2018.
Chinese analysts suggest that Cooper’s mission underscores Britain’s intent to sustain communication with major powers like China amid growing global uncertainties, while also building upon the progress achieved during Starmer’s earlier trip. The Global Times reported that the visit reflects London’s effort to advance bilateral cooperation.
The UK was the first major Western nation to recognize China in 1950, and in May 2004, the two countries elevated their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
Today, bilateral trade between the two nations amounts to $98.36 billion annually (2024 figures). They have also established several high-level mechanisms for cooperation, including the Annual Prime Minister’s Meeting, Economic and Financial Dialogue, Strategic Dialogue, and High-Level People-to-People Dialogue.
