Kremlin Outlines Agenda for Putin’s China Trip

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing this week alongside a senior delegation for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping covering trade, energy cooperation, bilateral relations, and key international developments, according to Kremlin officials.

The May 19-20 visit comes as Russia and China mark the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the agreement symbolizes relations that have reached an “unprecedentedly high level.”

Ushakov stated Monday that the Russian delegation will include top government ministers, senior Kremlin representatives, and executives from major state-owned corporations and financial institutions, including Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina.

According to the Kremlin official, Putin and Xi are expected to hold both private and expanded-format meetings focused on “the most important and sensitive issues” involving cooperation between the two countries as well as major global matters.

Reports indicate that roughly 40 bilateral agreements could be signed during the visit, including a joint declaration aimed at strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing.

The two leaders are also expected to approve a separate statement promoting a “multipolar world” and “a new type of international relations,” Ushakov said.

He added that Russia and China are “not friends against anyone,” but instead seek to promote “peace and universal prosperity.”

Ushakov also rejected suggestions that the timing of Putin’s visit was linked to recent contacts between China and the United States, saying there was “no connection whatsoever” and noting that preparations for the trip began shortly after a video call between Putin and Xi in February.

US President Donald Trump visited China for two days last week, where discussions with Xi reportedly covered issues including Iran, Taiwan, and trade. Although both sides described the talks positively, no significant breakthroughs were announced on major disputes between Washington and Beijing.
